If you could use one word to describe Ciryl Gane’s entire MMA career thus far, it would probably be simply: undefeated. Every setback he sustains seems to just push him further and further into success, and always with his winning smiles. For most of the world, March 5th, 2020 may not have been a notable day. But for fight fans in the know, a Twitter message on that day from French heavyweight Ciryl Gane would shuffle the dance card for the impending UFC 249 event. Gane apologized to his fans for having to withdraw from the event due to sustaining a pneumothorax–a collapsed lung–during training. It was not the first time Gane had sustained the painful and potentially life-threatening injury, nor was it the first time it had interrupted his training and preparation for an event. In fact, Gane was in the middle of a year of setbacks in his journey toward a coveted title shot when he had to pull out of UFC 249. But just like every other difficulty in Gane’s life, it wouldn’t stop him for long.
